The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
